Thanks to all of you for your many comments. Unfortunately, those which are not in English, have no relevance, or are not comprehensible will not be approved. And yes, it is spam city out there. Hopefully some new installations will help control that.
I can only describe the art of writing as the translation of images in the mind into words on a page. Images haunt us, memories plague us, and dreams weave their way through our daytime reveries and our nighttime sleep. Some offer hope of better things to come; others point a glaring finger at our failings. The daunting task of the writer is to separate what should be recorded and what should be forgotten.
Writing is a solitary vocation. There is a certain comfort for us who sequester ourselves with nothing but the ghosts of our stories to keep us company. As much as we might prefer at times, none of us can exist in a void. So we step forward, offering our works for the scrutiny and enjoyment of others. Otherwise the countless hours in seclusion have yielded little beyond a pile of pages – nothing more than a neglected manuscript.
Having said this, I suppose this site has two main purposes. The first is the hope of gaining some exposure. The second is the possibility that this site might in some way act as a sort of personal therapy through blogs such as Ravings from the Asylum. Quite possibly the two are intertwined, for I suspect any following I gain might first originate more as a result of my ‘ravings’ than my novels. After all, don’t we all struggle?
So, I hope that both you and I gain something from this experience. Like the formation of a novel, I can see hints of images, but what the result might be is not yet clear.
A Shiver of the Soul is a dark novel. It was penned during a decidedly black period in my life. In many ways, it was written to describe the mood and tone of depression while recording the observations on certain aspects of life dealing with compulsion and obsession.
A spirit, a ghost, an apparition . . . One word, the detective had summed it all up in four short syllables.”
Remington Brandtford is consumed by his need to paint. Plagued by hallucinations and haunted by dreams, he believes that the lost spirits from purgatory are coming to him, that he can save their souls through his paintings. But a killer is stalking the quiet streets of his city, and the faster he paints the faster his subjects die. Through bouts of mania and raging depression, he is getting nearer to the truth. But the truth he is hoping to discover is even blacker than his works of art.
